That is not to say there is no science in it, there is, a lot. While the book is classed as a sci-fi classic, it reads equally as well as a study of guilt, obsession and sacrifice. It is a deeper, more philosophical exploration about what it means to be human. I read this book after having watched the George Clooney film and I have to say the book is 10 times better. It was extremely enjoyable to read the chapters from both Auburn and Owen’s perspectives, almost as if you are stepping inside the minds of the characters as the events are unfolding. Owen is instantly likeable, making a living by painting the “confessions” left in the dropbox in his studio, yet not quite as forthcoming with confessions of his own. This novel does not focus as heavily on the physical relationship between its main characters as much as Hoover’s novels often do, rather exploring the dynamics between them as they begin to fall in love despite the forces that strive to keep them apart. There’s more than meets the eye with Auburn and Owen’s stories- these characters have much more depth to them than is immediately known.Īs the title indicates, confessions and truths (and lack thereof) are at the core of this love story which was unlike the other Colleen Hoover novels I’ve read before. The two share more than a middle name a deep, seemingly inexplicable, connection forms between them from the moment the two meet when Auburn walks up to the door of Owen’s art studio. Colleen Hoover’s novel Confess centres around the charismatic and selfless Owen Mason Gentry and the sweet but fierce Auburn Mason Reed. Colonel Bill Jackson, Sniper Team/Division Commander (Hog Boss), and Naval Captain Martha Franklin of the troop assault carrier Tripoli and Task Force Commander, slowly walk the beach hand in hand. On the other hand Cris lacked that psychological support he could have got from his mother and his emotions are explosively expressed in his mind (he often exclaim to himself "shite" "stars!" and such things expressing fear, doubt or anger). While Paul is rebellious, he is restraining his temper through meditation and mannerism his mother taught him. They are both highly educated children of influential people, they both contain high expectation and are both trained into martial arts by personal instructors that are their only friend. Her character, Cris, isn't trying to be the classic spoiled rebelling teenager you find in YA books, but a replica of Paul, from Herbert's Dune. The way the writer approached the story and her character at the beginning gave me the impression of the book trying to be some Young Adult SciFi-fantasy salad, but once I picked up some clues I'd started putting thing together. She was like an angler using all baits at her disposal to lure the SciFi readers into her hook. It was a fun read not only because of the story itself but especially because of the author.
